It is important to have your eyes examined for good health and to make sure that no disease is present. However, the vast majority of vision problems in children and adults are not related to disease. Visual problems in healthy people can include; myopia (nearsighted), hyperopia (farsighted), astigmatism (warped cornea), presbyopia (aging eyes), amblyopia (lazy-eye), visual motion sickness, eye turns, poor tracking, poor depth perception, over-convergence, convergence insufficiency, and poor peripheral vision.
No vision screening and few eye exams cover all of these symptoms. Dr. Cummings, a behavioral optometrist, is interested in how they eyes work together as a team and how the brain interprets that information. Children often pass vision screening with 20/20 vision, but have some deficiencies in the above listed areas, resulting in poor reading, attention problems, or motion sickness. These symptoms can be alleviated with properly prescribed glasses or vision therapy.
